About Jennifer Kirk

 

As long as I can remember I've been making art, and from a young I age was encouraged to find my expression through these mediums.

 

Born and raised in New York, I spent summers in Los Angeles, and by the age of ten I was drawing, sketching, and exploring the visible world on both coasts that differed, so vastly.  At 17, I was accepted to the New York State Summer School of the Arts where I learned that raw talent was just the first step in honing light, texture, and the consideration of who I was as a human being in this turning world. This stage ultimately translated into a more mature and patient way towards expression- painting. My BFA is from the School of Visual Arts.

 

FULL CIRCLE

Having begun as a natural artist observing the worlds from which I sprung, by my thirties I discovered the sensuousness and excitement of painting in oil. Oil is slow and forgiving. It is a teacher, that reminds us that life is about push and pull, tension and release; and engaging in the internal and external experience, simultaneously. Oil brought me to the Still Life collection. It asked that I slow down and examine the details of the living world, albeit, 'staged' at the time.

 

Restlessness and maturity eventually invited me to wander, and so I fervently began to look outward from the controlled theater of the still life. This turn, directed me towards the encapsulations of los Angeles' West side and Hollywood life. These vignettes of local city life still invigorate my body and soul.

The Urban Landscapes collection

Evokes an unseen voyeur witnessing human populations and our folly, in conjunction, with the receptivity that this City of Angels permits, by allowing the human condition to play out for better or worse.
